Astrophysicist Shane L. Larson will explore how science fiction depicts star travel in books and movies, the true science of building starships, and the real possibility of leaving Earth.
There is no dream more compelling than sailing to the stars. The idea of travelling beyond the confines of Earth has captivated our imaginations for centuries through fiction, film, and scientific research. Early speculations focused on simpler voyages, from the Earth to the moon, inspiring seminal works of science fiction, like Johannes Kepler's 1608 text Somnium and Georges Méliès’ classic 1902 silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune. Later imaginings extended to other planets and, ultimately, into the vast void between the stars.
